Air in there
I got a new bag of salt and vinegar potato chips. When Utz says vinegar they really mean it. Well, let me explain why I have brought you here. When I opened this large bag that cost me $2 and change, I found that most of what I thought I paid for was released with the sound of a slight exhale and the pleasant smell of potato chips. There in the bottom of the bag was the prize I had sought. I realized that I should have purchased two bags to equal the amount of chips I thought I would be getting. We have all been at this juncture, but how did we get here? When was it that you agreed to paying the same price you always have for food items and agreed to get less? The process is called shrinkage. Now you all have another negative connotation to associate with this word -- you know what I'm talking about. These manufactures believe that they are doing us a favor; at least they say they are. When asked about the size differential, one manufacturer said that it was packaging the product to be more in line with the eating habits of its consumers. Consumers wanted smaller amounts of product(in this case potato chips) in the bag to prevent the spoiling of the remainder that was not eaten. Who the hell are these people? Calista Flockhart does not eat chips and she is the only person I could think of that might make such a ludicrous statement. But for the sake of argument, let us say that the people did want this. Why then was the price not adjusted down? How can you give me less for the same amount of money? Shenanigans, I say! If this were South Park, I could beat these jokers with a broom. It is not just the big manufactures. Girl Scouts, don't think you have slipped under the radar. You might be one of the worst offenders. Giving me fewer cookies is the way of the world, but don't insult me by leaving in the old cookie insert tray so I can see just how many cookies you're shafting me for. I once saw a show on this subject and it mentioned that the only product that was hit by corporate shrinkage and then sized back up was the tampon. I do not know what this goes to prove, but I do know this: Corprate America will never be able to convince me that less is more.
